What is a domain and what it is for.?
A website consists of two parts, firstly the hosting and a Domain. your hosting is a server based on the internet that hols your information and provides the cotent to the computers that request it.
A domain in a way, is a shortcut to your hosting. the same way that you may have a shortcut on your computer to load a commonly used program
A website will almost always require a domain, it would be fair to say that if your website is customer facing (people on the internet want to see the content) then your website should have a domain.
A domain can provide a very professional image to your website also. you have a website at a specific and easy to remember address for you and your customers, A website that has its own domain will look far more professional on your own domain than a website created on a free hosting site. these sites usually contain advertisements attached to your website pages.
The other advantage of owning a domain is the corporate appearance of your email. instead of giving out your internet email address that may not look professional (say barry.warren99@aol.com) you can have an email address better suited to you and your business (barry.waren@mybusiness.com)
What Domain should i choose?
There are two answers to this, as technically it is two questions.
Firstly, you can have any domain address that you want - providing that it is not in use already. if you are after a website address for your company name or skill (www.zeegy.net or www.weymouth-websites.com) then they are likely to be available for you to register.
more generalised domain address (www.hosting.com) are a lot harder to obtain, but may be more available to you if you want your company to grow later on.
the second answer relates to the type of domain that you want to register. there are many different domains but if you can, it is advised that you own a .co.uk or a .com website address. they are the most commonly used domains. however all the domains are there to provide the same service, and if you require a specific address then another domain may be the key. hence zeegy.net is zeegy.net, zeegy.com is unavailable to register.
if the domain that you want is in use, do your homework, there is no point in registering hosting.org if hosting.com is available, active
